About

This is a site for posting views on race relations in the U. S. South, news, politics, music, travels, and whatever information rat is passing through the media snake.

This blog used to be called “Black Flag Over Binghamton” which was the name of a WHRW public affairs show I conducted years ago with my friends Pete Morse and Christine Arato. I changed the name because the old one seemed too punk for what I’m doing. I gave it my own name for a while, but that seemed too reductive.

My name is Scott West, I’m a South Carolinian, graduate of Wando High School and the College of Charleston, past resident of New York State and City and currently living near Spartanburg, SC.

I work for a daily paper in the production department.  I am not a paid professional journalist, but I do read a lot of journalism. I don’t pretend to have any particular qualifications, aside from being well read and well traveled. Forgetting to write about an observation or the synthesis of coincidentally digested articles will inevitably result in forgetting the once read subject entirely. So either I mark the topic and move on or I’ll never incorporate what I was reading.

I have a few long-in-gestation book projects. Blogging gets me writing and practicing. I read much more than I write about here, and the writing is too much excerpts from other sources, but it helps me remember and it is a start.

In June 2009 I began a two-year term on the Steering Committee of the South Carolina Green Party.

I can be contacted directly at slwest [at] gmail [dot] com.

    Scott,

Your website rocks. Are you sure we can’t convince you to re-post some of your stuff at Green Party Watch?

Also, I’m looking through emails for your number. We’ve moved about 8 miles from the corner of I-85 and Hwy 101, exit 60 I think…the BMW exit. I think we may be close enough to each other for a visit if you like, or meet as we had discussed for lunch somewhere.

Either way, your blog is outstanding and I enjoy it when I drop by…which I don’t do nearly enough.

    Peace!
